Guiding your children towards having a healthy eating preference can be a tricky affair most of the times. Often as parents, we may then resort to dishing out anything in the hopes that they will simply get some food into their bellies.

Here are some tricks that we have discovered that are super beneficial in Gia not only wanting to eat on a more healthier route, but that can also save you a buck or two. Let me explain…

Gia comes with us to the shops most of the time, so we make a mindful effort with what we add to our trolley. It’s a simple tactic, show your child healthy eating choices, fill your cart with fresh produce and cut down on processed foods. Make a game out of picking different colors of fruits and vegetables. Think about dishes you can make in the coming week, one of our favorites is stir-fry (green broccoli, yellow and red peppers, orange carrots, and so on).

We have a self serve water dispenser on our kitchen counter that Gia can help herself to. Whenever she feels thirsty, she knows to grab a cup from her cupboard and help herself to some water. This simple idea has had such great benefits, and more often than not, Gia will willingly choose water over anything else because she can do it herself, and being able to do stuff on your own as a three-year-old is huge for her!

Letting Gia take part in the preparation of dinner has become an everyday thing that she loves. This educates her about the foods we eat and also gets her excited to eat the food we have all prepared together.

If your child does not enjoy a particular food, try not put consequences in place around that particular food. Try not to say things like no TV time if you do not eat your broccoli. Instead, put the ball in their hands and say something like “You can leave your broccoli if you have more carrots” Avoid creating a negative mindset around foods they may, at their current stage, not enjoy.

Healthful eating has many benefits for children and can:

- Stabilise their energy.

- Improve their minds.

- Help them maintain a healthy weight.

- Help prevent mental health conditions. These include depression, anxiety, and ADHD.

- Help them build a healthy immune system that may result in less sick days, saving you in not having to take time away from work and save you in medical bills.

Plus, having a healthy diet and focusing on nutrition are some of the simplest and most important ways to prevent the onset of disease. Healthy eating can help prevent many chronic diseases. These include obesity, heart disease, high blood pressure, and type 2 diabetes.

Healthy foods do not have to cost you an arm and a leg, and for us as a family, weekly meal planning has been beneficial in not only establishing a healthy menu for the week, but it also allows us to go on a Sunday afternoon shop and get all we need for the week. Daily shopping is a money disaster waiting to happen. You will almost always leave with more items than you need, which in turn pushes up your purchase amount and leaves you having spent way more than you had planned for by the end of the week.
